Claire Porter
Claire began potting in her early 20's in Kent, working through adult education evening classes before gaining City and Guilds qualifications in Ceramics at Tonbridge Adult Education Centre, under the guidance of the brilliant and inspiring Brigit Head.
In 2005 she moved with her family to the beautiful county of Norfolk and set up a small garden studio, where she works and teaches beginners to throw on the potter’s wheel. Claire designs and throws beautiful, functional stoneware items to eat and drink from, anything from a tiny espresso cup to a dinner service, using a small selected palette of satin matt dolomite glazes in earth tones, fired in gas reduction to cone 10.
Inspired by the natural world – the ever-changing seasons, the light and shadow on land and sea, Claire can use her small selected palette of hand mixed glazes to evoke the sunrise over the beach at Blakeney or Cley or the rich orange sunset over the freshly ploughed fields she is surrounded by, Claire loves the tactile nature of clay, how it can be dug from the ground, shaped and fired, and turned into a solid vessel that can last a generation - or more.
