David Robert Carter Metalwork

David trained as a microbiologist but drastically changed the direction of his career when becoming fired by iron in 1986 and setting up his first workshop in the Cambridgeshire Fens, where he has lived and had his studios ever since.

He is largely self-taught, and originally knowing very little about metalwork decided that the best way to learn about the medium was to work in engineering, starting at the very bottom and working his way up to become a skilled industrial metalworker. Having to split his time between his studio and industry has been hard, but recently, at last, he is able to be a full time maker.

David started making candlesticks but also developed metal bowls and vessels in steel, stainless steel and bronze which he exhibited and sold in the UK and abroad.

When Lasercutting became more widely available in the mid 1990's he taught himself how to design and program and did a whole new range of work without using the forge.

He now concentrates on the clocks and candlesticks, gradually refining them over time.

David enjoys the mixture of using both ancient methods and the latest technology, and the robust nature of the material.
