Colin Boatman - Woodturner
Colin Boatman is a full-time woodturner, born in Norfolk, and who has worked in Nelson’s County all his life. It’s therefore important for him to work with the amazing materials grown in Norfolk and Suffolk. A lot of time and effort is spent sourcing the best timber available to make his special one-off pieces, using only what nature presents him, no added colour or texture.
The actual turning is only a small part of the process. The majority of timber is sourced within Norfolk and Suffolk, from bona fide timber merchants. After the tree has been cut into planks, it is then air dried for a period of one year per one inch thickness. Alternatively Colin part turns the large bowls to approximate shape and depth with an overall wall thickness of one inch. These can then be dried in the wood store until the moisture content has reduced to 10% -12% before turning the final product.
Ornamental Products These products have been finished with a wax polish, so to keep the sheen, give your product a regular polish with a good wax.
Products for fruit or food These items have an oil finish so as to be food friendly. To keep these products in good condition, apply ample amounts of olive/vegetable oil with kitchen roll and allow to dry.
Melamine Lacquer This is a hard finish to allow contact with damp surfaces, only needing a wipe over with olive/vegetable oil.
Please do not place directly near open fires or on top of radiators. To keep it in good condition, your product should not be placed in full sun or near windows. Definitely don’t put these wooden items in the dishwasher or submerge them in water.
In this general catalogue we publish just a few examples of Colin's work, with most of the exhibits currently available being shown in our website shop.
