The ancient Peruvian tradition of gourd carving portrayed in the design of these paperweights by the Anglo-Peruvian wildlife sculpture, Oswaldo Merchor.

Since the times of the the Incas, and even before, gourds ( a type of hard skinned pumpkin ) have been carved in Peru.  In those days, gourds were seen as having a magical significance, attributing to them the power of being able to bring good luck by portraying in the engravings scenes of plenty, harmony and happiness.  A mould of the carved gourd is subsequently made and used to cast paperweights, where the design is brought to life by applying a black or coloured ink which sinks into the design exposing its full glory.
